What to Wear, When to Book, and What to Expect for Fall Family Photos in Central Texas
Fall family photos sound simple until you actually start planning them.
Suddenly you are thinking about outfits, unpredictable Texas weather, bedtime, whether your toddler will cooperate, and how you are supposed to get everyone dressed and out the door without losing your mind.
If that sounds familiar, I have you.
This guide covers everything you need to know about planning fall family photos in Killeen and the surrounding Central Texas area, including when to book, what to wear, what time sessions happen, and what to expect if your kids decide they have absolutely no interest in taking pictures.
And the most important thing to know before we start?
Your family does not need to be perfect for beautiful photographs.
Come ready to play, love on your people and be together.
I will take care of the rest.
When should we book fall family photos in Killeen?
If you are hoping for family photos during the fall season in Central Texas, I recommend getting on the calendar early.
October and November are especially popular because families are thinking about holiday cards, Christmas gifts and updating the family photos hanging in their homes.
But fall in Central Texas looks a little different than the colorful autumn you might picture in other parts of the country.
Our landscape often stays green well into the season, with golden grasses, earthy fields and warmer temperatures hanging around through October. More traditional fall color usually comes later.
The good news is that we do not need bright orange trees to make your photographs feel like fall.
Beautiful golden light, an earthy location and the right wardrobe can completely change the feeling of your gallery.
What is the best time of day for fall family photos in Texas?
For outdoor sessions, I typically photograph families close to sunset when the light is softer and warmer.
That beautiful golden light you see throughout my portfolio does not happen at the same clock time all year, which means your session time will depend on the season and your location.
As the days get shorter in fall, sessions begin earlier in the evening.
If you have little ones with an early bedtime, keep this in mind when choosing your session date.
I will help determine the best start time based on the sunset, location and light so you do not have to figure that part out yourself.

What should we wear for fall family photos?
Fall is such a beautiful season for adding warmth, texture and layers to your family's wardrobe.
Instead of everyone matching, I recommend choosing colors and pieces that coordinate while still giving each person their own look.
- Creams, warm neutrals, rust, muted greens, browns, soft blues and other earthy colors photograph beautifully against the Central Texas landscape.
- Texture also makes a huge difference.
- Think knits, linen, flowing dresses, subtle patterns and layers rather than several people wearing the exact same color and fabric.
Most importantly, choose clothing that allows you to move.
You might be sitting together, walking through a field, picking up your toddler, running with your kids or twirling your little girl.
Your clothes should look beautiful, but they should also let you actually enjoy your family.
And you do not have to figure it out alone.
Every full family session includes access to my Client Wardrobe, where you can browse dresses and select pieces available to borrow for your session.
Honestly, this is one of the biggest things I help my families with.
If coordinating everyone's outfits sounds overwhelming, start with yourself and build the rest of the family around what you feel good wearing.
Every family session includes access to my Client Wardrobe, and I also provide Style & Select if you want help pulling everyone's outfits together.
You can absolutely send me screenshots and say, “Alysa, help.”
I will.

If you would rather shop from your own closet or purchase something new, I also give clients access to Style & Select, an online styling tool that makes coordinating outfits for the entire family much easier.
Choose your family members, colors and style, then browse outfit combinations that work beautifully together.
What if my kids do not cooperate for family photos?
Here is the good news...I do not need them to.
Your children are not coming to your family session to perform for my camera.
They can run. Explore. Be silly. Need a snack. Want Mom. Decide they are completely done with the thing I just asked them to do.
That is childhood.
Instead of spending the entire session trying to make everyone stand perfectly and smile at me, I will give your family things to do.
- We might play a game.
- Run together.
- Dance.
- Snuggle.
- Let Dad toss someone into the air.
- Have a very serious competition over who gives the best kisses.
- And somewhere between all of that movement and laughter, we will slow down too.
- Because I am watching for the little moments just as much as the big ones.
- The way your toddler reaches for your hand.
- The little head resting against Dad.
- The belly laugh that turns into a cuddle.
- The child who suddenly needs Mom.
- Those moments are part of your story too.
Your family does not need to look perfect. I want your photographs to feel like your family.
Movement
Big laugh
Parent and child connection
Tiny detail
Quiet moment
And if your toddler has a meltdown?
Then your toddler has a meltdown.
Truly.
Sometimes we change what we are doing. Sometimes we give them space. Sometimes they need to play, have a snack, or just be held by Mom for a minute.
You do not need to apologize for your children being children.
And sometimes the photograph of your little one wrapped around you because they needed Mom ends up meaning more than whatever photograph we originally planned.
How can we make family photos less stressful?
First, please do not spend the car ride telling everyone they need to behave for pictures.
Seriously.
Please do not practice smiles or spend the drive reminding everyone to behave for pictures.
Instead, tell them you are going somewhere to play together and that your photographer is coming along to take pictures.
Then let me handle the rest.
I will guide you when you need direction, give you things to do together and step in when something actually needs fixing.
Once we start, I want you focused on your family instead of constantly checking clothing, fixing hair or asking everyone to look at the camera.
If your daughter's dress gets a little wrinkled, your son's shirt comes untucked or the wind moves your hair, we are probably doing something right.
I'll worry about what it looks like. You worry about loving on your people.
Give yourself more time than you think you need before leaving home. Arriving without rushing gives everyone a chance to settle into the experience.
And if you want, make a whole evening out of it. Grab dinner afterward, get ice cream or head home for a family movie night.
Family pictures do not have to feel like another thing on your to do list.
What happens if it rains on the day of our family photos?
Central Texas weather likes to keep us guessing.
I keep an eye on the forecast leading up to outdoor sessions, but we generally do not make weather decisions too far in advance because Texas forecasts can change quickly.
If the weather truly will not cooperate, we will talk through our options and reschedule when necessary.
Clouds alone are not necessarily a reason to cancel. Some locations photograph beautifully with softer, overcast light.
My goal is always to make the best decision for your family and the photographs we are creating.
You do not have to obsessively refresh the weather app.
I am already watching it.

They work especially well for families wanting updated photographs for holiday cards, gifts, frames or their yearly family photo without needing the extra time of a full family session.
Full Family Sessions
If you want more than a quick update, a full family session gives us the time to slow down and capture more of this season of your family.
We have room for more movement, different family combinations, individual moments with each child, and those quieter pieces that tend to happen once everyone forgets about the camera.
This is where we can create a fuller gallery filled with both the wild moments and the quiet ones.
Should we book a Fall Mini or a full family session?
his really depends on what you want from your photographs.
If you mainly want an updated family photo for holiday cards, gifts, frames, or your yearly family picture, a Fall Mini is likely all you need. They are quick, playful, and intentionally simple.
If you want more time together, more variety, individual moments with each child, different family combinations, and a gallery that tells more of your family's story, a full family session will give us the time and space for that.
Neither option is about whether your kids will cooperate better for one or the other.
It is simply about how much of this season you want documented.
